MY FAIR LADY | Joanna Goodwin - "...choreographing one of the greatest musicals of all time"

Ahead of the opening of Curve’s loverly Christmas musical, MY FAIR LADY, chorographer Joanna Goodwin took some time to talk about why she is so excited to work on this dazzling production.

Having worked with Nikolai and at Curve previously, how does it feel to be returning?

I’m so looking forward to being back at Curve and alongside Nikolai, having worked here as a performer then an assistant choreographer it feels so wonderful to be back choreographing (what I consider) one of the greatest musicals of all time.

You’ve mentioned previously that a school trip to see the 2001 National Theatre production of MY FAIR LADY blew you away. Why are you excited to take on this new version with Curve?

Yes, seeing that show is a core memory of mine whilst at ballet school. For me the music is a choreographer’s dream, especially with some incredible additional new arrangements by George Dyer. I can’t wait to get working on building dance breaks and making our extraordinary set come to life.

How will you be approaching this show?

I have been doing prep from the minute I found out I had the job, I have lots of material prepared but I look forward to working with the actors to create a new MY FAIR LADY.

Are there any moments you are most looking forward to choreographing?

‘Get me to the Church on Time’ and the stylised Ascot sequence!

Why do you think MY FAIR LADY has had such a lasting impact?

It’s timeless, a classic and the music is exquisite. It’s also one of the best written musicals, and has stood the test of time.

What are you most looking forward to when you start rehearsals?

Bringing everything to life and out of my brain, I can’t wait to see the cast altogether and hear them sing this terrific score.

This will be a fresh vibrant version of the classic we all know and love with a terrific set designed by Michael Taylor and extraordinary company you won’t want to miss!
