The Mountaintop

Synopsis

Share:

Wednesday 3 April, 1968 is no ordinary night.

After making his history-altering “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr retires to Room 306 of Lorraine Motel.

As he reflects on another day spent with Memphis’ public servants in their fight for equality and fair pay, room service arrives in the form of Camae – a sweet motel maid with some big, unexpected news.

Written by multi award-winning playwright Katori Hall (TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL; THE HOT WING KING), THE MOUNTAINTOP returns to our Studio Theatre following the success of last year’s Made at Curve staged reading.

Nathan Powell – Creative Director of Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse Theatres – returns to direct this new fully-staged version, with Ray Strasser-King (SUCKER PUNCH) reprising his role as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, alongside Justina Kehinde (GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY) as Camae.

Book now for this thrilling and often funny reimagining of Dr. King’s final hours, confronting life, legacy and everything in between.

Sponsored by Leicester-based music licensing company PPL PRS as part of Black History Month at Curve.

Age guidance: 12+
Show warnings: This production contains flashing light close to a strobe effect, some moderate strong and racially sensitive language, adult themes and depictions of smoking (use of herbal cigarettes).
Running time: 90 minutes (no interval)

The performance on Fri 27 Sep will be followed by a post-show discussion. Please remain in your seats after the performance to join this free 30 minute discussion with the cast and the creatives from THE MOUNTAINTOP, hosted by Pawlet Brookes MBE. The discussion will reflect on the significance of the play’s themes and how last year’s staged reading of THE MOUNTAINTOP has evolved into a full production.
