Alexander Love's Journey with CYC Dance
Curve Young Company (CYC) is for young people aged 7 – 19 years with a passion for performing arts. In this blog, Alexander Love, a member of Curve Young Company Dance since its beginning in 2012, talks about his experience with Curve, how CYC has helped shape his contemporary technique and performance skills, leading to a professional career in dance.
“Before I joined CYC, I hadn’t decided whether dance was the career for me, however after 7 years in the company and through doing other dance opportunities my outlook changed and I decided on a career in dance. I attended a local dance school in Wigston from the age of 4 which introduced me to CYC at the age of 11. The dance company at Curve has been one of the biggest changing points in my life, it gave me multiple opportunities to perform at Curve and around Leicester. It began to teach me contemporary technique while giving me a supportive and artistic environment, which included many individuals similar to myself. CYC led me to join the Centre for Advanced Training in Dance which furthermore led to myself being a part of the National Youth Dance Company.
“The training is phenomenal, and all credit should go to Mel Knott who challenges and inspires me in my dance. Mel showed me the fun side to creating work and set me up for the many challenges of: creating work, what inspirations to use, and then how to turn the ideas into movement. This inspiration has led me to have the opportunity to work with other influences such as Matthew Bourne and Akram Khan. I recently performed in Romeo and Juliet at Curve by Matthew Bourne. I had the opportunity to work semi-professionally and to perform on the same stage where I had performed several times with CYC. Next year will see me moving to London and attending the London School of Contemporary Dance. I will be on a full-time vocational course aiming to gain a degree in contemporary dance, which will hopefully lead me to a profession in contemporary dance. I thoroughly recommend any young individual inspired by dance and the arts to get involved in the young companies situated at the theatre.
